Spain attracts remote workers all over the world!

22.09.2022

Digital nomads are a new layer of people who, due to the development of digital technologies and the ability to work remotely, travel all over the world. Many countries have already seen for themselves the positive aspects of the presence of such people. They do a new input to the development of the country, these are new qualified personnel, many of whom create start-ups and offer investment projects. Therefore, the government thought about how to make the life of "nomads" more comfortable in the host country. Spain was not left out.

Last year, the Spanish government approved a draft law aimed at developing the startup ecosystem, as well as finding young and talented people to attract to their country.

Thanks to the proposals of Spanish politicians, the procedure for issuing visas and residence documents in the country will be simplified in the future, and there will be a more comfortable procedure for creating start-ups and investing is expected to be introduced.

Thanks to a special visa scheme, foreigners working remotely and their close family members will be able to reside in Spain for five years and be eligible for a special tax regime with lower rates, paying non-resident income tax. In order to attract talents to Spain, the general requirements for participation in this mode will be relaxed, and the requirement for a previous absence of residence in Spain will be reduced from ten to five years.

However, this start-up law has not yet come into force. But Spanish politicians are working on making it easier for nomads to obtain visas and residence permits as soon as possible.

Special visa schemes will be launched to cover various profiles. Everyone will benefit from favorable taxation and a lower tax rate. The non-resident income tax regime will apply to startup executives and employees, investors and digital nomads and will provide visa holders and their family members with access to a special visa for up to five years.

Non-resident Spanish citizens and foreigners who have been abroad for more than five years will also be eligible for a digital nomad visa. The period of stay will be increased from five to ten years, and their family members will be able to benefit from it.

Income tax on non-residents will be reduced from 25% to 15% over the first four years.

The Spanish start-up law is currently before Parliament and is expected to come into force later this year.
